Strong thunderstorms were pushing through the Plains, evolving into a line of storms that will stretch from the southern Plains into the western Great Lakes.
Less intense storms were to pop up throughout the afternoon in the Southeast. Florida should bear the brunt of the storms, with heavy thunderstorms, gusty winds and frequent lightning.
In the East, a few thunderstorms were forecast to persist throughout the mid-Atlantic states. The storms were eventually expected to move off the New England coast.
High temperatures were expected in the East, with 90-degree heat spreading into southern New England.
High heat also was to continue plaguing the Southwest, with triple-digit temperatures throughout eastern California and Arizona.

Coastal California will see another day of warm temperatures before onshore winds push fog ashore in the evening, driving temperatures to much cooler levels on Tuesday.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Sunday ranged from a low of 26 degrees at Chiloquin, Ore., to a high of 114 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
