[March 06, 2007]  Lincoln Rural Fire Department got the call at 3:37 p.m. on Monday. The famous Pig Hip outside Elkhart was ablaze

We had a great response time of seven minutes, but the fire had gotten "too big a start on us," said Rural Fire Chief Dean Kukuck. Seven fire departments responded: Rural Lincoln, Lincoln City, Broadwell, Elkhart, Mount Pulaski, New Holland and Middletown.

The state fire marshal is in charge of the investigation. The fire marshal told Kukuck that the cause of the fire is undetermined, but the start of the fire was at the back of the building.

The historic Route 66 icon is a total loss. An old block building about a foot away and Ernie Edwards' house about 8 or 10 feet away still stand, and neither of them were hurt.

Four firefighters had a ceiling come down on them, but all of them signed a release form stating they did not want to go to the hospital.

The greatest loss is in the contents of the museum, all of which are nearly irreplaceable.
