Lincoln City Council positions taking shape          Send a link to a friend

Ward 3 alderman position filled

Ward 5 alderman candidate decided with a draw

[March 09, 2007]  Between a decision and a luck of the draw this week, it looks as though two city of Lincoln alderman positions are decided and the council will open its fiscal year on May 1 with all seats filled and one new face.

Council members approved Mayor Beth Davis' recommendation to appoint former Alderman David Armbrust to Ward 3. Armbrust comes out of a retirement to fill a vacancy created by Daron Whittaker's recent resignation.

It was two years ago as Armburst was entering retirement from his employment that he also decided not to run for re-election and Whittaker won his seat.

Armbrust's appointment took place at the opening of Monday night's business meeting. He was sworn in and asked to immediately take his position. Aldermen warmly welcomed him back as he sat down in his old seat. They teased and cajoled that they thought the tall pile of file folders awaiting him might keep him busy for a while.

For the second time this fiscal year a local board position was decided by luck.

In December the Logan County Board had a 6-6 tie for the chairmanship. Dick Logan won over Bill Sahs by the flip of a quarter performed by Sheriff Steve Nichols.

In the primary contest on Feb. 27 there was an 85-85 tie for Lincoln Ward 5 alderman between current Alderman Derrick Crane and Jeff Hoinacki.

On Thursday, Judge David Coogan was called upon to draw from a straw hat who would be the Republican candidate in the consolidated election. Hoinacki was the winner.

Candidates for the consolidated election on April 17 are all Republicans with no Democrats or other party oppositions.
