"This website provides a variety of programs and materials for local
government officials in Illinois, helping them to do their jobs
better," said Jane Scherer, U of I Extension urban programs
specialist who oversees Extension's websites. According to Jeri
Marxman, U of I Extension public policy specialist, local
governments and Extension have been working together almost since
the latter's creation in 1914.
"From the beginning, Extension has been the point of contact for
local communities and the University of Illinois," she said. "Since
the mid-'60s, Extension has worked with local decision-makers in
programs developed to improve delivery of local services, develop
interagency coordination, impact local economic development and
increase the capacity of local officials to serve their
constituents."
The Local Government Information and Education Network seeks to
achieve three broad goals. First, it provides educational programs
for local government in Illinois. Second, it develops applied
research projects that assist local officials in creating local
policy. Third, it strengthens relationships between local government
officials and U of I Extension.

The bottom line of our mission is to develop first-rate educational
programming that assists local officials in their decision-making
and provides education in ways that are convenient, interactive and
cost-effective," Marxman explained.
The new site contains links to a variety of resources and
services now available to aid local officials as well as the
"Tomorrow's Leaders" program, a local government curriculum for high
school students.
A number of fact sheets are also available to assist local
officials in meeting the challenges of office.
Those interested in learning more about programs to assist local
governments should contact their local Extension office, Marxman at
