WILLIAMS, Ind. (AP) -- Thieves stole a 65-pound
mastodon jawbone and other artifacts from a display at a bait and
tackle shop. Chris Amstutz, owner of White River Bait & Tackle, said
someone entered through a window early Monday morning and took the
items that he had collected through the years.

"I don't think they were professionals," he said. "They dropped some
stuff along the way. I'm guessing it was some kids." Amstutz found
the relic while diving for mussels in the White River in 1988. He
said his display was well known in the community, about 25 miles
south of Bloomington.
It was a complete jawbone with four teeth still in it, he said.

The curator of paleobiology at the Indiana State Museum confirmed
that the find was a mastodon jaw, Amstutz said.
He was considering offering a reward if the jawbone is returned
intact.
"It took me 40 years to find this one," he said.
