[November 07, 2007]  (AP) Lake-effect snow was forecast Wednesday across the Great Lakes region, with heavy amounts expected over the eastern shores of Lake Ontario, Lake Erie and Lake Michigan.

Rain was forecast for portions of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Precipitation was expected to taper off in the afternoon as the system moves into Quebec.

Arctic air was expected to surge southward across the Midwest, Great Lakes and East Coast. Highs for much of the region were projected to reach only in the 30s and lower 40s.

In the West, light showers were forecast for portions of northern Washington, and widespread low clouds and fog were anticipated along Southern California's coast.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 3 degrees at Minot, N.D., to a high of 98 degrees at Gila Bend, Ariz.
