Clear skies and light winds allowed overnight lows in the Northeast to drop to some of the chilliest temperatures of the season. Clouds throughout the northern portion of the country were expected to prevent temperatures from warming on Thursday.
Parts of the Great Lakes were expected to get snow or rain as cold air picks up moisture from the lakes. The Dakotas could also have rain or snow as a weak frontal system passes over the northern Plains. Rain followed by snow was forecast for Minnesota.
A cold front was expected to move into the Northwest late Thursday, bringing gusty winds and heavy rain to Washington and Oregon. The remainder of the West was likely to see more clear skies and warm temperatures.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Wednesday ranged from a low of 10 degrees at Alamosa, Colo., to a high of 95 degrees at Gila Bend, Ariz.
