The western storm was expected to bring heavy rain and wind gusts exceeding 50 mph to some coastal areas and in some mountainous areas of the Northwest. A high wind watch was in effect for coastal Washington and Oregon, with watches extended inland throughout Oregon.
The heaviest rain was expected along the northern tip of the Olympic Peninsula, but the western slopes of the Cascades were expected also to see high rainfall totals.
A cold front was expected to move through the Ohio Valley and the lower Mississippi Valley, bringing rain and thunderstorm, possibly with hail.
Rain from this system was expected to move into Pennsylvania and New York and then on to the Atlantic coast later in the day.
High temperatures were expected to be significantly cooler in the High Plains, but warmer by a few degrees in the Northeast.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 6 degrees at Saranac Lake, N.Y., to a high of 90 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
