The lower Mississippi Valley and the western portion of the Tennessee Valley were at slight risk of severe thunderstorms. Forecasters said damaging wind gusts and hail were possible.
Another cold front was expected to drop into the upper Midwest and upper Great Lakes, bringing temperatures down to the 30s and 40s on Wednesday and Thursday. Light rain was forecast.
In the West, an approaching Pacific system was expected to cause rain along Washington's coast as early as Wednesday afternoon. As the system pushes ashore, rain and mountain snow were forecast to spread across the Northwest, northwestern California and the northern Rockies by Thursday morning.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Tuesday ranged from a low of 13 degrees at Boulder, Wyo., to a high of 93 degrees at Fullerton, Calif.
