[November 15, 2007]  (AP) A cold front bringing rain and chilly temperatures made its way over the East Coast early Thursday, while the Plains and Rockies and Southwest basked under mild and dry skies.

Moderate to heavy rain was forecast along the Appalachians and into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, with some scattered thunderstorms possible.

Some rain also was expected to fall over parts of the parched Southeast -- welcome news to the drought-stricken region. Snow was possible over the Great Lakes and in the colder air over the Appalachians.

A giant high pressure system in the central portion of the country was forecast to keep conditions dry and usher more mild air into the Plains and push colder air farther to the east.

The Northeast and Great Lakes were predicted to see temperatures in the 30s, 40s and 50s, while the Plains will see temperatures in the 50s and 60s.

In the West, a Pacific front was expected to break the dry weather streak in the Northwest. The first wave will only bring rain and some high elevation to Washington state, but the next wave later this week was to bring precipitation farther down the coast and into northern California.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Wednesday ranged from a low of minus-2 degrees at Lake Yellowstone, Wyo., to a high of 93 degrees at Anaheim, Calif.
