"The pain just started," she said, "and I knew it was time."
Before she could get to Natchez Regional Hospital from her Woodville home, however, Mykayla Jalyin Gaines arrived in the back seat of her stepfather's truck.
Mykayla's grandmother, Lucy Brister, handled the delivery.
"That baby could not wait," the eldest Brister said in an article at

"I pulled her jeans off and said, 'God give me strength.'"
By the time she got her daughter's jeans off, the baby's head was already fully visible.
Minyon Brister said when the family left the house she thought she had a pretty good chance of making it to the hospital, but that quickly changed as the family traveled down U.S. 61 North.
Lucy Brister said the baby came so fast they did not even stop the truck.
"She just came out," she said.

Minyon Brister was thankful the birth went so quickly. In three previous pregnancies, she used an epidural to help deaden the pain of childbirth.
"I was scared because I did not get the shot first," she said. "But I just thank God my mother was there with me."
She said labor without pain medication wasn't so bad, however.
"You just have to keep pushing," she said.
Brister said the family was caught off guard because the baby girl was not due until Tuesday.
"She's just a little surprise," she said.
