A cold front over the Plains was moving east and expected to trigger snow across the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes. Heavy snowfall was possible over the southwestern shore of the Lake Superior.
In the West, rain and mountain snow was forecast for the coastal ranges, the Cascades and Northern Rockies. Three to 6 inches of snow were expected in the valleys of the northeast Washington
mountains as well as the valleys of the northern Panhandle mountains.
A chance of showers or light rain was possible over southeastern Arizona later in the day.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of minus 21 degrees at Lake Metigoshe, N.D., to a high of 86 degrees at Okeechobee, Fla.
