[October 03, 2007]  (AP) A low pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico was expected to bring widely scattered showers and thunderstorms to the Gulf Coast and Florida Peninsula on Wednesday. Forecasters said the system could become a tropical depression and lead to flooding along the Gulf Coast.

Light rain was forecast from the Carolinas to southern New England. The cold front that pounded the nation's midsection Tuesday was expected to bring more showers and thunderstorms from the Great Lakes to the Ohio and Tennessee valleys and the southern Plains on Wednesday.

In the West, a cold front was expected to cool off the Pacific Northwest and bring tremendous amounts of rain. Moderate to heavy coastal rain and mountain snow was forecast for the Pacific Northwest and lower elevation rain and snow showers were anticipated over the northern Great Basin and northern Rockies.

Temperatures in the oower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 19 degrees at Fossil Butte, Wyo., to a high of 100 degrees at Wink, Texas.
