The snowstorms were expected to move southward through the Rocky Mountains as the day progressed.
A low pressure front in the West was moving along the West Coast and inland through the northern Rockies and was expected to bring heavy rainstorms to the area and some snow to higher elevations.
More scattered showers were expected in central California, and snow was forecast for the Sierra Nevadas.
A low pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico was expected to bring wet weather through the Southeast and Gulf Coast. Forecasters said the system could become a tropical depression as it approached the coast and was expected to move further inland toward the Tennessee Valley.
A frontal system was forecast to stall over the Plains and upper Midwest as it encounters a high pressure system over the Northeast, eventually producing showers and thunderstorms through the upper Midwest later in the day.
Temperatures in the lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 24 degrees at Gunnison, Colo., to a high of 100 degrees at Bullhead City, Ariz.
