[October 09, 2007]  (AP) A heat wave in the East was expected to wane Tuesday as a cold front pushes through the region, while a Pacific storm was forecast to blast the Northwest with heavy rain and strong winds.

The cold front was expected to bring showers and thunderstorms to the Appalachians and East Coast states. Temperatures were forecast to drop significantly overnight after the front passes.

The front was also expected to trigger showers and thunderstorms from Louisiana to northern Florida. Southern Texas could see wet weather because of a developing area of tropical low pressure in the Caribbean.

In the West, rain and gusty winds were forecast for coastal Washington and Oregon and into the San Francisco Bay Area. The strongest winds were anticipated to slam into the Canadian Northwest overnight.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states on Monday ranged from a low of 18 degrees at Alamosa, Colo., to a high of 96 degrees at South Hill, Va.
