Parts of the Mississippi Valley, southern Plains, southern Rockies and Gulf states are expected to get rain. Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible from central New York to New England Tuesday afternoon and evening.
Behind this system, a cold front will likely move southeastward through the Midwest, bringing rain and scattered thunderstorms to the upper Great Lakes region. Temperatures in the 50s and 60s are expected in the upper Midwest.
Sunny, warm weather is expected in inland areas out West, with morning clouds lingering off the coast in some areas. Temperatures inland are expected to rise into the 80s and 90s in the afternoon. Parts of the desert Southwest are expected to get temperatures in the 100s.
Temperatures in the lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 18 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont., to a high of 114 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
