[September 18, 2007]  (AP) Forecasters predicted thunderstorms packing large hail and high winds in the central United States on Tuesday, and temperatures were expected to drop in the Northeast and the West.

Clear skies were expected to bring widespread frost as temperatures fall into the lower 30s across northern New England. But plenty of sunshine was expected to result in temperatures reaching back into the 60s and 70s in the afternoon.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected along the Southeast coast.

Widely scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected from the upper Mississippi Valley to the central Plains, with some pockets of severe weather packing large hail and isolated damaging winds.

In the West, rain and scattered thunderstorms were expected from the Northwest to central California. Cooler air was also expected in the region.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 20 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont., to a high of 104 degrees at Lake Havasu City, Ariz.
