In the West, forecasters predicted rain across southern California and the southern Sierra Nevada.
The system was expected to move inland, bringing heavy rain to southern and central California as well as Nevada and the Four Corners states. Flash flooding was possible in some desert regions.
Temperatures in the West were expected to remain exceptionally cold, with forecast highs around 20 degrees cooler than normal for this time of year.
Warmer temperatures and drier weather were expected in the Northeast, with rain continuing along the Southeastern coastline.
Temperatures in the lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 24 degrees at Meacham, Ore., to a high of 98 degrees at Goodyear, Ariz.
