[September 25, 2007]  (AP) Forecasters predicted a low pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico could bring showers and thunderstorms from eastern Texas to the lower Mississippi Valley on Tuesday, while stormy weather was also expected in much of the central U.S.

Strong to severe thunderstorms were expected to develop across parts of the Midwest and Great Lakes, with potential wind gusts over 60 mph. Highs in the region are expected in the 50s and lower 60s.

In the East, mild, clear conditions were mostly expected, with highs expected in the upper 70s and 80s. Florida, however, was expected to see showers and thunderstorms.

In the West, light rain was expected in western Washington. Otherwise, dry, clear conditions were expected across the region. Highs in California were expected to climb into the 80s and 90s.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 20 degrees at Meacham, Ore., to a high of 97 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
