[September 26, 2007]  (AP) A cold front over the Mississippi Valley pushed eastward early Wednesday, threatening rain from New England to the Ohio Valley. A warm, clear day dawned over the West.

The northern portion of the front was expected to push through the Northeast, while the southern portion becomes stationary from the Ohio and mid-Mississippi valleys to the southern Plains.

In the mid-Atlantic and Southeast, moist east winds were to keep scattered showers and thunderstorms pounding across Florida, spreading northward through the Carolina and Virginia coasts by Thursday.

A weak front was to pass across the northern Plains and upper Midwest, triggering scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms.

Another beautiful early autumn day was in store for the West thanks to a ridge of high pressure. Temperatures were expected to be normal over the Pacific Northwest, while California can expect highs several degrees above normal.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states on Tuesday ranged from a low of 19 degrees at Chemult, Ore., to a high of 98 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
