Man uses handcuff key to attempt escape   Send a link to a friend

[September 28, 2007]  VANCLEAVE, Miss. (AP) -- A convicted felon wanted on burglary charges in Jackson County attempted to escape officers by unlocking his handcuffs while in the back of a police car.

Donald Kevin Goff has apparently been carrying around a handcuff key in his pants pocket in the event he was captured by authorities, who had been looking for him since Sept. 13.

Jackson County sheriff's deputies, acting on a tip, found Goff asleep in a camper at Bluff Creek Campgrounds in Vancleave Friday.

Deputies charged him on an outstanding warrant for the Sept. 13 burglary of a Vancleave home.

According to Sheriff Mike Byrd, Goff apparently used the handcuff key to free himself while riding in the back of the patrol car. Deputies opened the car door and Goff ran.

Sheriff's Deputy Donnie Moore caught up with Goff and he was back in custody, this time minus the handcuff's key.

Authorities said it is unclear where Goff got the key.

When he was arrested the second time, deputies added other charges, including an outstanding warrant out of Harrison County for failure to appear and new charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and felony escape.
