There was a moderate risk of severe weather from northern Texas through western Arkansas and a slight risk of severe weather from southern Texas through the Tennessee Valley.
Later in the day, the precipitation was expected to move into the Ohio Valley and eventually into the Northeast.
Most of the precipitation was to miss the drought-stricken Southeast.
High elevation snow was to fall through the Central Rockies.
Meanwhile, scattered rain showers were expected in Southern California.
The Northeast was expected to see a range of temperatures from the 40s to the 60s, while the Southeast was to rise into the 70s and 80s. The Southern Plains was to rise into the 80s and 90s, while the Upper Midwest was to see temperatures in the 40s and 50s. The Northwest was to rise into the 60s and 70s.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of minus 17 degrees at Lake Yellowstone, Wyo., to a high of 93 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
