Widely scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected from the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley to the southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley.
There was a risk of severe thunderstorms, including tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds, over much of the southern Plains.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms were also forecast for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
Out West, widely scattered snow showers and lower elevation rain was anticipated from the Pacific Northwest and Northern California across the Intermountain West and Rockies into Thursday. Areas of moderate to heavy snow were likely over the Rockies.
Elsewhere, scattered showers and thunderstorms were predicted for southern and western Florida.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Tuesday ranged from a low of zero at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 99 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
