Thunderstorms containing high winds and hail were forecast from Louisiana's coast through northern Michigan in the morning, before moving through the Northeast at night.
Flooding in the Midwest was to continue as rain and snow fell. Steady rain was expected to taper off to showers late in the morning.
Portions of the northern Plains were forecast to get up to a foot of snow.
The West was expected to see above-average temperatures and clear skies, with some locations possibly breaking record highs Friday or Saturday.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 10 degrees at Lake Berthoud Pass, Colo., to a high of 103 degrees at McAllen, Texas.
