[April 15, 2008]  (AP)  Wintry weather was expected to linger in the Northwest on Tuesday, while cool temperatures were forecast for much of the East.

Widespread snow and coastal rain were forecast from the Northwest into the Intermountain West and Rockies, where temperatures were expected to fall into the 30s and 40s. Showers and thunderstorms were likely to stretch into the northern Plains.

Light rain and drizzle were anticipated in the Southeast, while snow was possible across the southern Appalachians. Many areas of the Southeast were expected to see temperatures drop 5 to 10 degrees below normal.

The Southwest was forecast to continue cooling off after record heat over the weekend.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 5 degrees at Land O Lakes, Wis., to a high of 104 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
