Quake action continues to rattle Illinois

Send a link to a friend

[April 18, 2008]  An early morning earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale was centered near the eastern border of southern Illinois. The quake was the first of five recorded shakings since 4:37 a.m. Friday. The first and the most recent, which measured 4.5 magnitude at 10:14 a.m., were felt in Lincoln.

Here in Logan County, stories have already begun to circulate from those who were awake at 4:37 a.m. or are light sleepers. They felt and heard things that rattle, or bump easily, as the tremor rolled through. Dogs and cats are said to have also responded to the unusual disturbance.

Cheryl Hedrick from the Logan County Emergency Management Agency said that there have been no reports of damage so far. Locally, officials and building superintendents were checking structures this morning such as the Logan County Courthouse dome and attic for damage.

The intensity level of the tremors as they reached here in Logan County was not believed to be sufficient to warrant concern about bridges or other infrastructure damage.
