Rain was likely in the Midwest, but intense thunderstorms were unlikely.
East of the storm, temperatures were expected to soar, with parts of Virginia expected to reach the upper 80s, while highs in the upper 70s and low 80s were expected to be widespread from the Southeast to Maine. Clear skies and generally light winds were likely.
The western Plains expected warming temperatures after the chilly weather that moved in earlier in the week. Highs were to rise into the 60s and 70s across the region.
Along the West Coast, temperatures were to cool down a bit at the coast, but the interior valleys should remain quite hot. The Northwest was to be cooler as cloud cover moved in off the Pacific. A few showers were possible across Washington.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 6 degrees at Leadville, Colo., to a high of 97 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
