[April 21, 2008]  (AP)  Heavy rain was drenching the Mid-Atlantic states early Monday, while an unseasonable chill settled over the Northwest and thunderstorms threatened the Plains.

Thunderstorms, strong winds and downpours were forecast along the North Carolina coast and throughout Virginia, fed by moisture-rich air from the Gulf Stream.

In the Northeast, high pressure was blocking the storm from moving northward, keeping skies across the region clear. Temperatures in New England will remain warm, but cloud cover in the Mid-Atlantic will suppress temperatures from New Jersey and Pennsylvania south through North Carolina.

Thunderstorms were forecast to develop in the Dakotas by midmorning, then as the day heats up, thunderstorms were expected to explode over Minnesota and Iowa.

The Northern Rockies could feel some unseasonably cold air filter down out of Canada, and snow was anticipated throughout Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

The Southwest and California were predicted to stay dry on Monday, but temperatures across the region will remain cool as an upper-level cold trough marches slowly eastward.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Sunday ranged from a low of 6 degrees at Butte, Mont., to a high of 96 degrees at Wink, Texas.
