The storm system that pounded through the Eastern U.S. on Monday slowly moved Northeast, with light rain and isolated thunderstorms expected for the
Mid-Atlantic states and southern Florida.
Southern New England and the Appalachians can expect showers and storms to taper off in the afternoon, but northern New England will see precipitation continuing through the night.
More wintry weather was in store for the West. Rain and mountain snow will continue in the Pacific Northwest, spreading across the northern Intermountain West and Rockies in the afternoon and evening.
Temperaturewise, two pools of cool air will sag south Tuesday. One spreads from the Upper Midwest through the Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Northeast, while the other one pushes through the Northwest.
Highs were expected mainly in the 40s and 50s for both regions. That could offer some relief to residents in Southern California following high heat over the weekend.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Monday ranged from a low of 10 degrees at International Falls, Minn., to a high of 103 degrees at Yuma, Ariz.
