Three to
6 inches of snow could fall in the Northern Rockies by early Thursday at elevations of 4,000 to 5,000 feet. Heavy snow may also fall across the northern and central High Plains.
Scattered snow showers should develop over parts of northern New England, far northern Michigan and the central Appalachians.
Scattered rain was expected over parts of the Upper Midwest, starting in the afternoon.
Temperatures will remain on the cool side from the Upper Midwest through the Great Lakes and Northeast, but most of the East will have mild weather.
Parts of the Desert Southwest and southern High Plains can again expect highs above 100.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of 14 degrees at Stonington, Mich., to a high of 98 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
