High pressure building over the Appalachians and Midwest was expected to bring sunny skies to the region.
A cold front was expected to unleash thunderstorms in the Plains states. Storms could generate strong winds and hail in Kansas and Nebraska.
Thunderstorms also were forecast in parts of the South.
Clear skies were forecast for the West Coast.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of 30 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 115 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
