[August 13, 2008] (AP) Thunderstorms packing heavy rain, gusty winds, large hail and possibly tornadoes were forecast across the Southeast and into the southern Plains on Wednesday, while the Northeast was expected to be stormy and most of the West was to be dry and warm.

Civic Low pressure was expected to fire up storms across the central Plains that could become severe. Storms also were possible in the lower Mississippi Valley. Temperatures were expected to reach the 70s and 80s in the northern Plains and into the 90s farther south.

Showers and storms were forecast for the Northeast. Thunderstorms also were possible in Virginia, West Virginia and possibly Maryland. Temperatures in the region were predicted to remain cool, with highs expected to be only in the 70s. The Southeast, however, was expected to be in the 80s and possibly reach the 90s.

The West was likely to see clear, warm conditions, except for showers and storms associated with the monsoon season in the Four Corners region. Temperatures were expected to range from the 70s and the 80s in the Northwest to the 90s and 100s in the desert regions of the Southwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Tuesday ranged from a low of 30 degrees at Wisdom, Mont., to a high of 119 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
