[August 23, 2008]  (AP)  Tropical Storm Fay was expected to travel westward on Saturday as it's direction remains under the influence of an area of high pressure over the Northeast. The system was likely to move slowly while producing heavy rains and put areas of western Florida at risk of flooding.

To the west of Fay, southwestern Texas was expected to see showers and thunderstorms as an area of low pressure moves into the state.

Showers and thunderstorms were also forecast for the Upper Mississippi Valley down into the Central Plains as a cold front pushes through the region.

The Pacific Northwest and Northern Plains were expected to remain dry and see warmer temperatures.

Hot, dry weather was forecast for the West and Southwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of 25 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 116 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
