WTC survivor staircase moves again at ground zero

[December 11, 2008]  NEW YORK (AP) -- The staircase that served as an escape route for people fleeing the World Trade Center on Sept. 11 is being moved for the last time at ground zero.

The 22-foot-tall staircase was an above-ground remnant of the original trade center complex after the 2001 terrorist attacks; survivors took the stairs from the outdoor trade center complex to the street below before the towers collapsed.

Preservationists fought for years to keep it where it was, but it stood in the footprint of a planned office tower on the trade center site.

It was lifted and moved across the site in March and again in July. On Thursday, workers will move the 37 stairs to their final spot at the entrance to the future Sept. 11 museum.
