A strong, cold front associated with this system was to produce a mix of rain, sleet and snow as it swept across the Great Lakes and the Mississippi Valley. Temperatures were to plummet in the southern Plains.
To the west, low pressure was to continue moving southward along the West Coast. Widespread rain and snow showers were expected across the Pacific Northwest, northern California and eastern Nevada. The storms were to generate widespread rainfall across southern California.
By afternoon, showers and storms were expected to spread eastward across the Great Basin and over the Rockies. The heaviest snow accumulations were expected over the Sierra Nevada.
The Midwest and intermountain West were to see temperatures ranging from the minus-20s to the 30s. Temperatures across the Northeast were to rise into the 40s and 50s, while the Southeast was to see temperature in the 50s, 60s and 70s.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Sunday ranged from a low of minus 27 degrees at Lewistown, Mont., to a high of 87 degrees at Alice, Texas.
