[December 20, 2008]  (AP)  Snow and cold weather was in store for the central portion of the country Saturday. A storm was to dump around 3 to 5 inches of snow over much of the region, with the possibility of half of a foot in areas. Winds were expected to be strong, and blizzard watches and warnings were issued to parts of South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa. The system was to usher cold air into the region. Temperatures over Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas and Nebraska were to range from the low single digits to below zero, with wind chills down into the minus 20s and 30s.

Farther south, the rest of the Plains was forecast to receive clouds and possibly a few rains showers during the day.

The Northeast was to start the day with rain and snow. The precipitation was to taper off across in the afternoon and evening, but the clouds were to linger.

Showers and thunderstorms were forecast for the the Southeast, except for Florida, which was expecting mostly clear skies during the day. Warm conditions were expected throughout the region, with highs in the 70s.

Snow and rain was expected in the Pacific Northwest. The precipitation was not expected to be very heavy, but 1 to 3 inches of snow was possible in some areas.

Scattered rain and snow showers were anticipated over the northern parts of California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado, while the rest of the Southwest was expecting mostly to partly cloudy skies.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Friday ranged from a low of minus 15 degrees at Cut Bank, Mont., to a high of 84 degrees at Shreveport, La.
