[December 23, 2008]  (AP)  A winter storm taking aim from the southern Rockies to the upper Midwest was forecast to bring ice and rain to the nation's midsection Tuesday, while a wintry mix was expected to creep into the Northeast, and the Northwest could also see more snow.

CivicThe storm was predicted to be centered over the Four Corners region during the first half of the day. It was expected to drop anywhere from a few inches of snow to up to a foot in the Rockies.

Later in the day, the storm was projected to march into the Mississippi Valley, where one- to three-tenths of an inch of ice was possible. More snow was expected across the upper Midwest. Snow was also forecast for the northern Plains, and rain and sleet were possible across the southern Plains. Gusty winds were likely across the entire central portion of the country.

Michigan could see between 6 to 12 inches of snow, while ice, snow and sleet were likely in Indiana. Clouds, snow and sleet were forecast to reach the Northeast by the end of the day, though no major accumulation was expected.

Below-freezing temperatures could cause sleet and later rain in parts of the Southwest, though no major precipitation was expected east of central Alabama.

A storm was forecast to crash into California late in the day, bringing rain to most of the state and snow to the northern portion and the Sierra Nevada. The storm could also bring more snow to parts of the Northwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Monday ranged from a low of minus 30 degrees at Minot, N.D., to a high of 78 degrees at Miami.
