In the West, rain was forecast in low elevations along the Pacific Coast. Snow levels were expected to be relatively low, although heavy snowfall was likely at the highest elevations of the Sierra and Cascade mountains.
Cold temperatures were forecast for the Northwest, but the southern half of California was to continue being warm.
The northern Plains were expected to remain cool, but substantially warmer than the extreme cold felt earlier this week.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Thursday ranged from a low of minus 32 degrees at International Falls, Minn., to a high of 84 degrees at Plant City, Fla.
