There are 13 candidates. All are Republican. As such, each winner's
name will be forwarded as the Republican candidate for the office on
the Nov. 4 ballot and would likely be the winner in the general
election. Three positions are contested. The contested positions
are for the state's attorney and two county board seats.
Two candidates are vying for the office of state's attorney,
Michael D. McIntosh and Timothy J. Huyett.
Huyett was first appointed to complete John Turner's term of
office when Turner became a judge. Huyett lost his first attempt at
election following his two-year appointment. He then won two
unopposed terms and is currently in the ninth of his combined years
as state's attorney in Logan County.
McIntosh began his law career prosecuting as an intern in the
Rock Island state's attorney's office and then worked the past 17
years for the Illinois State Police in a variety of law processes.
He has prior experience as an Illinois State Police trooper, which
lends an understanding usable in prosecution and in improving local
law enforcement's relationship to the judicial process. He has also
been involved in reviewing and writing government regulations.
Candidates' names are placed on the ballot in the order of the
time and day that they filed. A serious candidate wants every edge
they can get, County Clerk Sally Litterly explained. Getting your
name on the ballot above other contestants is an advantage.
That explains the five filings for
board or office positions that were made the minute filing opened at
8:30 a.m. Oct. 29, 2007:
-
State's attorney:
Michael D. McIntosh and Timothy J. Huyett
-
County board District
2: Richard E. "Dick" Logan
-
County board District
6: Terry Carlton
-
County board District
4: George M. Mitchell
When candidates of the same party file for the same position at
the same time, straws are drawn. Huyett drew the longer straw, and
his name will appear above McIntosh on the ballot.
The county is divided into six districts. Each district has two
board members who each serve a four-year term. The terms are
staggered to expire on alternate two-year separations so that there
is continuity for the district.
