[February 07, 2008]  (AP) Cold air was predicted to rush into the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic early Thursday as a low pressure system that has brought storms to the region moves offshore. The cold air was to reduce temperatures from their previously record and near-record highs.

Meanwhile, New England was expected to see significant snowfall.

In the West, a Pacific storm was to produce heavy rain and widespread high-elevation snow from the Northwest through the Intermountain West and Northern Rockies. Over a foot of new snow was to fall and winds were to increase. Travel through the Cascades was to be dangerous.

The Northeast was to rise into the 20s, 30s, and 40s, while the Southeast was to see temperatures mostly in the 50s and 60s. The Upper Midwest was to reach into the 20s and 30s, while the Southern Plains area was to see temperatures in the 50s and 60s. The Northwest was to climb into the 30s and 40s in the lower elevations.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a morning low of minus 24 degrees at Gunnison, Colo., to a midday high of 87 degrees at Melbourne, Fla.
