Rep. Dan Lipinski says the move gives immigration officials more time to investigate Corina Turcinovic's (tur-SIHN'-uh-vich-es) case.
Turcinovic lived on Chicago's South Side for 14 years while she cared for her paralyzed husband. He was struck by a vehicle while visiting the United States.
Turcinovic was detained in December. She was on her way to the airport last month when she got word that she would not immediately be deported.
Turcinovic says she's grateful for the yearlong reprieve.
Lipinski has introduced a bill that could grant her permanent resident status.
