[February 16, 2008]  CREVE COEUR, Mo. (AP) -- The mayor of the city where a gunman went on a violent shooting rampage during a city council meeting is improving at a hospital, a family friend said.

Kirkwood Mayor Mike Swoboda was upgraded to serious condition after being listed as critical since he was shot twice in the head Feb. 7, friend Tom Noonan said.

He still faces months of rehabilitation and recovery.

Two police officers, two council members and the city's public works director were killed when Charles Lee "Cookie" Thornton stormed the council chambers, shouting "Shoot the mayor!" last week. Thornton was shot and killed by police.
