Rain was expected to spread into the Great Basin and Northwest as the night progresses. A low pressure system moving from the Four Corners through the Rockies and into the Plains was predicted to bring up to a foot of snow to the higher elevations of the Rockies.
Meanwhile, parts of the East were expected to start drying out as a system moves out to sea, though rain and thunderstorms could linger in the Southeast.
A thin band of snow and freezing rain was forecast to move from the Ohio Valley toward southern New England. By the evening, the only remaining precipitation was expected to be in the Mid-Atlantic.
The Northeast was forecast to rise into the 20s and 30s, while the Southeast was to see temperatures in the 60s, 70s and 80s. The Great Lakes were expected to rise into the 20s and 30s, while the Northwest was to see temperatures in the 30s, 40s and 50s.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of minus 20 degrees at International Falls, Minn., to a high of 89 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
