Wet weather was winding down in the West as the storm system which plagued the region over the weekend weakens and slides into the Rockies.
As the storm shifts eastward it will carry a fair amount of moisture with it into the interior West, where low-elevation rainfall and some heavy snow in the mountains was expected.
Later in the day, the weakened remains of that snow and rain producer was to move into the eastern Plains, where abundant moisture from the Gulf of Mexico was expected.
The low was predicted to bring a small swath of freezing precipitation to the Midwest, particularly from central Iowa through southern Wisconsin.
South of this band of ice, moderate rainfall was expected, while to the north some light snowfall accumulation was likely.
In the East, high pressure was to surge northward up the coast, pushing a weak area of low pressure over the Carolinas out to sea. As the high builds throughout the day, clear skies and warming temperatures should spread through the region.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Sunday ranged from a low of minus 11 degrees at Whitefield, N.H., to a high of 91 degrees at Laredo, Texas.
