[February 27, 2008]  (AP) A strong storm was expected to move through New England and out into the Canadian Maritimes on Wednesday, socking the region with over a foot of new snow. Scattered snow showers also should be widespread from the Ohio Valley through the Northeast.

As the day progresses, snow showers were forecast to gradually dwindle and retreat to the Great Lakes region. Gusty winds should also remain along the eastern seaboard.

To the West, rain and high-elevation snow were expected from Washington and Oregon into the Intermountain West.

Meanwhile, extremely cool air was forecast to plummet southward from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast, greatly dampening daytime temperatures.

The Northeast temperatures should rise into the 20s and 30s, while the Southeast should see a range of temperatures from the 30s in the Appalachians to the 60s in Florida. The Upper Midwest is to rise into the 20s and 30s, while the Northwest should see temperatures in the 40s and 50s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Tuesday ranged from a low of minus 4 degrees at Yellowstone, Wyo., to a high of 89 degrees at Melbourne, Fla.
