Residents in eastern Maine could wake up to more than a foot of snow. Snow and frigid temperatures were also forecast for west of the Appalachians. Single-digit highs were likely in eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota.
Warmer temperatures were predicted for the western Plains, where highs in the 50s were expected in Montana. Warm weather was forecast for California, though the Northwest was expected to be chilly as a cold front pushes ashore, bringing heavy rain to the region. A second wave of precipitation was forecast to move in overnight, likely reaching California by daybreak Thursday.
The storm is expected to be the first in a series to hit the West Coast this week, dumping up to 10 feet of snow in the Cascades and Sierras and bringing nearly half a foot of rain to coastal mountains in California.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday ranged from a low of minus 31 degrees at Alamosa, Colo., to a high of 86 degrees at Marathon, Fla.
