Play of the Day: Clinton Gets Proposal

[January 12, 2008]  CITY OF COMMERCE, Calif. (AP) -- Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton wanted to talk about the economy. A voter in the audience wanted to talk marriage.

After wrapping up a speech outlining her economic stimulus proposal, the New York senator took questions from the crowd. The first question from one man was: "Hillary, marry me, baby."

The packed union hall loved it and applauded. Clinton smiled and told the man, gently, no.

"That is certainly the kindest offer I've had in a while," she said to laughter.

She quickly added, "I'd probably be arrested."

On Monday, the eve of the New Hampshire primary, Clinton faced a very different request. Two men stood in the crowd and began screaming, "Iron my shirt!"

Clinton, a former first lady running to become the nation's first female president, laughed at the seemingly sexist protest that suggested a woman's place is doing the laundry and not running the country.

"Ah, the remnants of sexism - alive and well," Clinton said to applause in a school auditorium.
