Parts of New York state were expected to receive 3 feet of snow, with the worst-hit area the Tug Hill Plateau, historically a magnet for lake-effect snow bands. Interstate 81 runs though the region and is expected to receive heavy snowfall.
High temperatures were expected to begin returning to normal in the Southeast.
In the West, snow showers are likely across the central Rockies, but should be light.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of minus 31 degrees at Sparta, Wis., to a high of 77 degrees at Marathon, Fla.
