[January 24, 2008]  (AP) California was expecting rain and significant snow in higher elevations of the Sierra Nevadas and in the mountains of the south half of the state on Thursday.

Precipitation will also increase in the Great Basin, beginning in the Southwest and pressing northward through Nevada, Utah and Colorado.

Meanwhile, the area downwind of the Great Lakes will receive more lake effect snow showers.

Showers are also possible along the Gulf Coast.

Temperatures in the Great Lakes will be in the single digits, while the Northeast will see temperatures in the 10s, 20s, and 30s. The Southeast Coast will be in the 50s and 60s, and the Southern Plains will see temperatures in the 30s and 40s. The Northwest will rise into the 20s and 30s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of minus 38 degrees at Embarrass, Minn., to a high of 83 degrees at Miami Beach, Fla.
