High temperatures were not expected to break zero in parts of South Dakota, and strong northerly winds were expected to send wind chills as low as minus 20 degrees.
From the Mississippi Valley to the Midwest, rain and snow were expected.
In the West, cooler temperatures were expected along the coast. The Sierras and Cascades could pick up a few inches to half a foot of snow.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of minus 20 degrees at Cut Bank, Mont., to a high of 84 degrees at Alice, Texas.
